Many of us think about gardening as a springtime flurry, followed by delicious bounty come summer. It’s true that spring and summer are times of abundant growth in the temperate world. But if you don’t get seeds in the ground early, you really haven’t missed the gardening boat!
Spring is not the only time to start a garden that will produce delicious food. Planting in the middle of summer, for harvests throughout the fall and winter, can be just as rewarding. In fact, some crops sweeten with cooler weather; they’re at their finest, in terms of flavor, when planted in midsummer and harvested in fall or winter.
As uncertainty plagues our industrial food systems, gardening is an important source of food security.
We’re year-round eaters, why not be year-round growers? Summer is not the only time we need to fill our bellies; we eat every day! Even in the fall and winter, it’s comforting to know that at least part of your meal doesn’t have to travel by truck or be passed through many hands before it reaches your plate.
Getting started gardening can be exciting, and it can feel daunting, no matter the time of year.
Your teachers, Natalie Bogwalker and Chloe Lieberman, share experience-based, practical instruction to help you succeed. This class will increase your confidence to grow vegetables that can brighten your plate, enhance your nourishment, and reduce your trips to the grocery store in the fall and winter.
Our goal is to help you get started with crops that are most likely to be successful and rewarding this time of year. For more experienced gardeners, this class will help you expand your repertoire in a way that makes sense and yields abundantly.
