Land-Based Living Through the Seasons Handbook

Here’s your guide to seasonal living and connecting with the beautiful, wild world around you. Even if you don’t live in the Southeast, many of the activities, recipes, and how-to’s will still be totally applicable to you. If you like what you see here, consider joining us for our Earthskills and permaculture design certificate immersion, which meets for one long-weekend per month from April through November. Another option is our intensive permaculture design course that spans a full 12 days every autumn (you’ll receive a permaculture design certificate with this one too). Additionally, check out the rest of our classes to find what perks your interest.

How to Build a Shelf: Step by Step Guide

You can build a shelf…it will feel so satisfying! This guide is for all skill levels and walks you through every step in the process, including how to choose lumber. You’ll notice that most of the people in the photos are women. That’s because we offer several sessions every year of basic carpentry classes for women only. But if you’re not a woman, don’t worry! We’ve got a fabulous building class that’s co-ed too; it focuses on tiny house construction (so students get to learn the whole process of building a house), and includes natural building techniques as well.

How to Sew a Leather Pouch: Video Mini-Course

Note: The specific type of leather used in this mini-course is 100% natural, brain tanned buckskin. It’s a very unique and extremely strong material. If you’re using commercially tanned leather for your pouch, choose synthetic sinew to sew with, rather than cutting thong from your leather. This is because commercial leather isn’t as strong as buckskin, so your pouch will not hold up if you make thong from it. We offer a comprehensive, online class on brain tanning buckskin, as well as one in-person brain tanning class each year. Additionally, you can check out our in-depth blog post about how to tan a deer hide to learn more.
